After managing somehow to survive the all-day barbeque with Eli’s ginormous family, book club was actually the last thing I wanted to do. Sleep was the first. But I had invited Eli, and there was no way he was letting me out of it now.

But it couldn’t hurt to try, right?

“Are you sure you want to waste our night doing this?” I asked, as he pulled up to Lisa’s house and shut off the engine. “The girls are loud and eccentric and overbearing and, and, they’ll eat you alive!” I gasped, when I ran out of reasons to not go in there.

Eli rolled his eyes. “And you love each and every one of them. I’m pretty sure I’ll manage to survive. Now, stop being silly. I’m excited to meet them, I’ve been hearing stories about them for years. It will be fun.”

You have a strange definition of the word fun.

Before I could protest further, or come up with any more excuses, he got out of the car and came around to my side, opening my door for me. He even bowed as he did so, with an over-exaggerated show of chivalry.

“Ever the gentleman Mr. Van Horn.”

“Only for you milady,” he joked, bowing even lower and more dramatically as he offered his hand for me to take.

I laughed, allowing him to help me out of the car. “Dork.”

Mischief lit his eyes, and I held back a smirk, knowing what was coming. “Did you know—”

“A dork is a whale’s penis!” We finished at the same time and I rolled my eyes. It was a line he had learned in seventh grade and he never overlooked an opportunity to use it, even a decade later.

“That never gets old.” He chuckled.

“Oh, it does. Trust me, it does.” I grabbed the two bags of chips and store-bought salsa we had picked up on the way over. “Also, not to burst your bubble, but it’s an urban legend. Dork used to be slang for penis, but never in regards specifically to whales. It pertained to humans. Turns out, it was just something we used for a comeback as kids if someone insulted us by, god forbid, calling us a dork.”

Eli gaped at me with such an expression of hurt. Putting a hand over his heart, he staggered back a step. “You’ve just ruined my entire childhood!” he cried, feigning devastation. “Seriously, Laura, what the hell? Party Pooper.”

I shook my head, laughing. He was in rare form tonight, which more than made up for his bad mood this morning. “Keep the lame jokes to a minimum and don’t embarrass me,” I warned, shaking a finger at him. “And be a gentleman and take one of these bags, would you?”

“All the lame jokes and embarrassing stories, got it.” He took not one, but both of the bags from my grasp, and we made our way to the front door. “Should I tell them about the time you laughed so hard that Coke
